On the night of July 5, 2016, Officers with the Chipley Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Impala bearing South Carolina License tag for a traffic violation at Pecan Street and Hwy 90. Upon attempting to initiate the traffic stop the driver of the vehicle failed to stop and fled from CPD officers for several blocks.
The driver of the vehicle then drove behind a residence on Pecan Street where he exited the vehicle and proceeded to flee from officers on foot into a wooded area where officers were able to apprehend him.
The suspect was identified as Derrick Lemonye Smith, B/M, age 43, of South Carolina. After restraining Smith, Offices located a pouch that he was lying on and found it to contain a quantity of “ICE” or crystal methamphetamine and Xanax pills a schedule 4
controlled substance. A search of his person also revealed that he was in possession of several blue pills identified as Diazepam, a schedule 4 controlled substance and a large sum of U.S. Currency.
A search of the suspect vehicle revealed the presence of another baggie containing “ICE” methamphetamine, paraphernalia and digital scales. Officer following up on the investigation conducted a consensual search of the motel room where he was staying and located a gun that the suspect admitted to offices was in fact his.
In total, Smith was found to be in possession of over 30 grams of crystal methamphetamine, a quantity of U.S. Currency, controlled prescription pills, paraphernalia and a firearm.
