Montgomery-- During the official Memorial Day holiday travel period -- between 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, and midnight Monday, May 25 -- Alabama State Troopers investigated seven fatal crashes with seven traffic fatalities, compared with the three traffic fatalities Troopers investigated in 2014 during the same 78-hour holiday travel period.

The crashes included one pedestrian, two motorcycles and an ATV, and they occurred in Talladega, Mobile, Lee, Clay, Russell, Tuscaloosa and Wilcox counties. The two motorcyclists killed were using helmets, but the ATV operator was not. None of the three individuals killed while traveling in vehicles was using a seat belt. Alcohol involvement is not available as Troopers continue to investigate the crashes.  In addition, Marine Patrol Troopers assisted with a drowning Sunday on Lake Jordan in Elmore County.

“One traffic or boating fatality is one too many,” said Col. John E. Richardson, director of the Alabama Law Enforcement’s Alabama Department of Public Safety, which comprises Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol.  “We urge motorists to use seat belts no matter how short the drive.  And it is just as important to ensure everyone on a boat has a life jacket. Please help us make this a safe summer.”

While the holiday travel period is over, Troopers will continue to participate in Click It Or Ticket, a national safety campaign promoting seat belts.
