DOTHAN—Author John D. Cressler will discuss his historical fiction novel “Emeralds of the Alhambra” during a book talk hosted by Troy University’s Dothan Campus library on Monday, Sept. 16.

Cressler is a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, and his debut novel, published in June by Sunbury Press, is an interfaith love story set in medieval Muslim Spain.

“Dr. John Cressler is one of the most interesting and engaging speakers you are likely to get the chance to listen to,” said Christopher Shaffer, Director of Library Services at the Dothan Campus. “An electrical engineer and gourmet chef, he also writes historical fiction in his spare time. On Sept. 16, he will be discussing his recently released book, the first in a three part series set in 14th century Spain.”

The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. inside the Harrison Room in Malone Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

The book talk is sponsored by a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and is being presented in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Humanities “Muslim Journeys” initiative.

Cressler is the Schlumberger Chair Professor in Electronics in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1990, and spent 8 years at IBM Research and 10 years on the faculty at Auburn University before joining Georgia Tech in 2002.
