Two hours before she died, Kay Letson Stevens text-messaged a friend that her ex-husband, Roger Stevens, threatened to kill her the night before.
“Roger called me last night. He described me with his unflattering adjectives and said he was going to kill me,” Kay Stevens, 62, wrote in a text to friend Becky Maner at 7:35 a.m. Saturday.
But, by 9:43 a.m., Decatur police responded to a call that Kay Stevens had been shot multiple times. She later died during surgery at Huntsville Hospital.
Roger Stevens, 63, is charged with murder in the slaying and faces up to life in prison for the Class A felony. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Stevens entered The Corner Bakery at 1123B Somerville Road S.E., according to an arrest affidavit filed Monday by Decatur police Sgt. George Silvestri, while both Kay Stevens and her sister, Brenda Suggs, were at the store.
“Roger Dale Stevens then saw Kay Letson Stevens in the bakery and grabbed a handgun, pursued her thru the bakery to the front of the business and shot her. He then fled the scene,” according to Silvestri.
According to Morgan County court records, Kay Stevens’ divorce from Roger Stevens was finalized Friday, the day before her death.
“She really believed he was going to kill her,” Maner said. “She said that so many times in the past year.”
