DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:   Tonight at Covenant Methodist Church there was a meeting to discuss suicides, the cause and intervention.

First, suicide is ugly and a sentence to your loved ones of a life of hell. The act of suicide makes your family and friends live with the fact of why. Suicide is not the answer to any problem.

The meeting was called and attended by many because of love. There is a realization by the community there is a problem where people think they are not important, or they are depressed, or they feel bullied, or....multiple reasons.

Some do not want to recognize there is an issue of mental illness. And guess what??? Mental Illness is not taboo!!!!!!!!! It is just like a heart issue, a broken leg, or any medical issue. The problem has to be treated.

Love brought people from all walks of life together tonight to discuss issues and solutions.

Tonight Sheriff Valenza, District Attorney Doug Valeska, Mayor Mike Schmitz, Dothan School Interim Supt. Todd Weeks, Sheriff Investigator Ricky Herring, Wicksburg Principal Mrs. Smith, Rehobeth School Margaret Valenza, Spectra Care, Dr. Handal, Houston County Commissioner Brandon Shoupe and many more were present to discuss the issue.

Mrs. Blakey of Wiregrass Suicide Prevention and volunteers were on hand.

The host Church, Sherry Koogler and Senior Pastor Hays McKay of Covenant Methodist are working with and through those in attendance to develop an action plan.

Some names have unintentionally been omitted so if I missed you it was not intentional.

VERY IMPORTANT

1. Suicide is preventable.

2. Suicide is never the answer.

3. You will not be glamorized as a good person when gone. So do not think you will be.

4. You will make those who love you live in a life of hell wondering why.

5. Depression and you in a dark hole is treatable. You can get better.

6. Mental Illness is a disease. A disease like other medical issues which is treatable.

7. Most important, A. God loves you, B. You are important, C. AND DO NOT DO IT.

Covenant is the central point for ideas.

During the meeting there was a suicide attempt on South Oates. A person took and unknown amount of meds.

After the meeting while some were still standing in the parking lot of the church talking, EMS responded to a second suicide attempt in west Dothan.

A real problem. But not the answer.

My cell number is 334-790-1729. If I don't answer and you are contemplating suicide, call me back to back to back and I will answer. Nothing is more important for me other than to stop and talk to you if contemplating taking your life.
