On September 6th, 2014 at approximately 9:29am, Officers with the Marianna Police Department responded to the area of Spring Street, Marianna, Florida in reference to a disturbance. The witness who called the police department stated that a female was found standing in the roadway screaming for help. Upon officer’s arrival on Spring Street, officers were directed to 2995 Spring Street. While officers were on scene the victim advised officers that an eleven month old child was taken from the residence.
The victim stated her estranged boyfriend, Joseph Tyler Adkison, whom she hasn’t spoken to in several weeks, entered her home. The victim advised officers that Adkison was the father of her eleven month old child. Court documentation from an injunction for protection which was filed against Adkison by the victim indicated Adkison didn’t have custodial rights to the child.
It was learned by officers that Adkison, uninvited and against the order of the courts, entered the residence and took the child from the custody of the mother. Adkison then proceeded to his vehicle which was being driven by his mother, Tammy McLemore. With the victim following close behind Adkison, several attempts to stop Adkison from leaving the residence with the child were made.
After Adkison entered the vehicle with the child, the victim attempted to remove the child from the vehicle. At this time, Adkison grabbed the victim and pulled her against the seats in the vehicle. Adkison then directed McLemore to drive away from the residence. Adkison then held the victim against her will, not allowing the victim to exit the vehicle. After the victim made several attempts to escape from the vehicle, McLemore stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Decatur Street and Spring Street. Adkison then shoved the victim from the vehicle and McLemore drove away, traveling to an unknown destination with the child.
Arrest warrants for Adkison and McLemore were obtained. Contact was made with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office who was able to locate McLemore at an address in Lynn Haven, Florida. Contact with the Gulf County Sheriff’s Office was made who were able to locate Adkison at an address in Wewahitchka, Florida. McLemore was arrested and transported to the Bay County Jail and Adkison was arrested and transported to the Gulf County Jail to await their first appearances.
The minor child was found to be in the custody of Adkison. The minor child was found to be in good health and was taken back into the custody of the mother.
The Marianna Police Department would like to thank officials with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Gulf County Sheriff’s Office, Office of the State Attorney for the 14th Judicial Circuit, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for their cooperation in the location and execution of the warrants.
