DOTHAN:   This afternoon Jason Smith passed away.

Jason Smith served the people of Houston and Henry County as an Assistant District Attorney. He has battled cancer for a number of years.

Jason’s wife is Kim and they have two children.

Jason was one the kindest and nicest people you would ever meet.  He had a positive attitude and personality. A pleasure to be around. Always treating everyone fair and politely.

Please keep Kim, the children and family in your prayers.

Jason Randolph Smith, 37, of Dothan, Alabama was received in the arms of his Father, Jesus Christ in heaven on Saturday, October 31, 2009.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life on Tuesday, November 3, 11:00 a.m., at Covenant United Methodist Church in Dothan, Alabama with Dr. Hays McKay officiating.

Jason is survived by his devoted wife of 14 years, Kim Brantley Smith, and two adoring children, Kate Smith (6) and Gabe Smith (2); his loving parents Johnny and Gini Majors of Pike Road, AL. and Randy and Mimi Smith of Dothan, AL; his sisters, Gwendolyn Majors of Morristown, NJ, Abbie Lee Majors Roehm and husband, Tom Roehm of Raleigh, North Carolina, Mibbie Majors of Atlanta, Georgia and Caroline Smith of Seaside, Florida; his grandparents, Allen and Mary Majors of Greenville, AL and his much loved cousin, Gabriel Hanway as well as an enormous circle of very special aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jason moved to Montgomery from Troy at the age of 11. His athletic talent was obvious at an early age and he poured himself into developing his football and baseball skills. A natural all around athlete, he chose to focus on his baseball career during high school and was recruited on scholarship to play right field at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. He later received his Juris Doctorate from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama. Throughout his life from elementary to law school, Jason was blessed with an abundance of dear friends, with whom he treasured and remained lifelong friends.

Jason enjoyed a successful law career, first with his father and most recently being employed as an Assistant District Attorney to the Honorable Doug Valeska, District Attorney for Henry-Houston County. Jason was a member of the Alabama State Bar Association, a member of the Alabama District Attorneys Association, a member of V.O.C.A.L. (Victims of Crime and Leniency) and also a member of the Wiregrass Chapter of the prestigious American Inns of Court. He was a faithful member of Covenant United Methodist Church and an avid Auburn fan.

Jason will not only be remembered for his handsome appearance but also his unshakable character which was anchored to the Lord and His word. Jason’s capacity for all things good was unmatched and he will always remain a hero in the hearts of his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers please make donations in memory of Jason Smith to the building fund of Covenant United Methodist Church, so that God’s mighty word may reach many.

 

Update: From Houston County Chairman Mark Culver:

At the request of the District Attorney and Sheriff, the County Commission has ordered the flags at the Courthouse and Sheriff's office to be flown at half mast through Tuesday in honor and memory of Assistant District Attorney Jason Smith who lost a long battle with cancer on Saturday afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

 Commissioner Taylor Barbaree has advised that Mayor Mike Schmitz has ordered the City of Dothan flags flown at half mast today in honor and memory of Assistant District Attorney Jason Smith.
