August 24, 2016: Since Bears for Baton Rouge began Thursday, August 18, hundreds of stuffed animals, in addition to boxes of diapers and school supplies, have been delivered to the Dothan Visitors Center. This project has been promoted through the local news, appearing on several evening broadcasts, and catching the attention of thousands of citizens in the Wiregrass Area, eager to help.

Principal Matt Rodgers of Enterprise High School has joined efforts with the CVB, and will be bringing donations collected from students to the CVB on Thursday afternoon. Donations will also be coming in from Donalsonville, Georgia, on Thursday. The Dothan CVB is overwhelmed with the response from the community, and we are so thankful for the generosity shown. Donations will continue to be received in the Visitors Center until 4:00PM on Thursday, August 25, with the donations shipping on Friday. Departure time is presently TBD, and will be announced Thursday. All donations will be delivered to an American Red Cross location to be distributed to shelters across the Baton Rouge area.

In the wake of the devastating flooding occurring in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the surrounding areas, the Dothan Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has organized the Bears for Baton Rouge Project. The Dothan CVB will be collecting donations in the Visitors Center through Thursday, August 25, 2016, with intent to mail donations on Friday, August 26, 2016. A unique item requested by the Red Cross in Baton Rouge is stuffed animals that they can give to children who have been displaced from their homes. In an evacuation circumstance, many comforting items are left to ruin, including stuffed animals. A donated teddy bear allows a small child a sense of comfort in a time of confusion and fear.

Other items requested have been school supplies, since area schools have been damaged. Crayons, pencils, composition books, blunt tip scissors, and glue sticks are encouraged. Baby necessities have also been requested, such as diapers of all sizes, wipes, formula, and bottles. For Immediate Release: Please bring your new or gently used stuffed animals, and your new school supplies and baby items to the Visitors Center at 3311 Ross Clark Circle for collection through Thursday, August 25. The Visitors Center is open from 8am-4pm on weekdays, 9am-4pm on Saturday, and 11am-4pm on Sunday. Please direct any questions regarding Bears for Baton Rouge to Katie Parrish, Director of Communications at the Dothan Area CVB, at (334) 794-6622.
