DOTHAN:   Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz will be announcing soon who will fill the seat for District 6 Dothan Commissioner. That appointment will be a temporary appointment.


Mayor Schmitz has been required to appoint several commissioners during his term as Mayor. Those appointments have been because commissioners have resigned during their term.


On Friday District 6 Commissioner Hamp Baxley announced his resignation. Baxley has moved out of his district. Recently his dad passed away and Hamp and his family have moved to his dad's house. That is what forced his resignation because the house was in District 5.


Mayor Schmitz appointment will be someone who will not seek election as District 6 commissioner. The Mayor feels that all should have an equal chance for the election.


Some names we have "heard" ( which means do not know for sure ) are Tami Culver and Dothan businessman Scott Powell.


Culver, the wife of Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver, is the President of Dothan Education Foundation.


Powell owns and operates Dothan Hardware on North Range Street in Dothan.


So far these are the only two we have heard as possible candidates.


When Mayor Schmitz announces the appointment for District 6 he will also announce an election date.

Dothan businessman Gary Roney of the Rim Shop is a possible contender for District 6 Dothan Commission.
