HEADLAND:    This morning before 6 AM Headland Police was in a situation with a person with a mental illness. The person is reported to have assaulted two females, assaulted the paramedics that were called to the residence.


When the first police officer arrived the person attacked the officer before he could get out of the police vehicle. The person injured the first officer who was able to fire a shot that made the patient run off.


A second officer arrived and the patient charged the second officer. The officer ordered the patient to stop but according to reports he kept charging the officer. After ordering to stop the officer finally had to shoot the person.


The person was transported by Headland Rescue to SAMC where he underwent emergency surgery.


We have just learned the person has died at SAMC.


The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by agents of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation. It is a common practice for agencies to contact an outside agency to conduct the investigation when officers are involved in shootings. In this case Headland Police Chief Mark Jones contacted ABI to conduct the investigation.


Both officers involved in this case was transported to SAMC to checked out.

The deceased has been identified as Patrick Humphrey.

Henry County Coroner Derek Wright has confirmed the name as O'Patrick Fitzgerald Humphrey, age 33 of Headland. Coroner Wright said the body will be sent to Montgomery for examination by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
