UPDATED @ 1:30 PM With More Specific Details

Late Saturday afternoon Dothan Police received information about a vehicle parked at the corner of Tacoma Street and Bell Street in Dothan. The vehicle contained a firearm and there was blood in the vehicle.

Dothan Police Patrol Division, under the command of Dothan Police Lt. Will Benny and Captain Keith Gray, began a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the vehicle, weapon and blood. Immediately a decision was made to call Dothan Police Criminal Investigators to the scene.

As the preliminary investigation information was being developed information surfaced that some of the possible criminal activities involved occurred in Headland and/or in Henry County. Investigators from Headland Police and Henry County Sheriff – Abbeville Police Task Force were called to the scene in Dothan.

The combined efforts of patrol and investigators developed information there had been a killing and the body was dumped in a wooded area in Henry County in the Tumbleton community.

As officers went to the Tumbleton community to begin to search for the body, preparations were also being made for search crews to begin early this morning.

The combined officers, to include Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox, searched the Tumbleton area and found the body in a wooded area. Agents from Alabama Bureau of Investigation, Captain Barry Tucker and Sgt. Tommy Merritt were also called into the investigation.

At the time the body was found Henry County Coroner Derek Wright was called into the investigation.

On the scene, as evidence was being recovered and additional information was being gathered, the investigators brought Houston – Henry County District Attorney Doug Valeska into the investigation. A decision was made, since the apparent chain of events had begin in Dothan, that Dothan Police Department should take the lead investigation role. The investigators continued to work hand in hand because all information has not been developed and this is a multi county, multi jurisdictional case at this time.

Since there is a question about where the person was killed at, Henry County Coroner Derek Wright notified Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd to respond to the scene, which he did.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson approved the dispatching of air support on Sunday to photograph the area from the air where the body was found.

At this time, the preliminary information is the victim received an income tax refund of $ 7,000.00, which was cashed at Chandler’s Check Cashing in Dothan. Initial investigation is the victim got into a vehicle with other subjects and traveled to the Tumbleton area to purchase a vehicle.

Information is as the victim and others were traveling to Henry County, one of the persons in the vehicle demanded the victim with the $ 7,000.00 pay him some $ 2,500.00 that he felt he was owed. When the victim refused, reports are the suspect pulled a firearm and shot the victim. Following the shooting the body was dumped in the Tumbleton area, and the suspect is reported to have taken all of the $ 7,000.00.

Some preliminary investigation information is the actual shooting death possibly took place near the Tumbleton area. However the investigation continues and the information is being compiled to all of the actual circumstances of where everything took place.

A suspect or suspects have been identified and officers are working to apprehend the suspect(s).

This case has been multi agency and multi jurisdictional. All agencies have been and are working together. They have made very cautious steps that all jurisdictions have been involved in the case where possible criminal activity has occurred.

The District Attorney of the county is not the Chief Law Enforcement Officer but the Chief Prosecutor for criminal cases. That is why the officers consulted him because the actual prosecution and what county to prosecute is his decision. The actual Chief Law Enforcement Officers are the Sheriff’s of the respective counties.

The body has been turned over to Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsy and evidence collection.

As more information is available we will update.
