UPDATED @ 5:17 PM
[Phenix City, Ala.] – Shortly before noon today, July 21, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) issued a Missing Child Alert to assist the Phenix City Police Department in a search for a missing 16-year-old who has severe autism. ALEA'S Aviation Unit responded and had been searching for approximately two hours when they were notified by ground units that a nearby neighbor had seen the teen on their security camera. Aviation then located him in a deep wooded ravine, lying on the ground between two logs and exhausted. Aviation crew members directed ground personnel to the teen, who then carried him to an awaiting ambulance. Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said, "With a triple digit heat index, today's rescue of the missing 16 year old could have had a tragic ending without ALEA's Aviation Unit. This unit provides an essential state service as we assist in rescue efforts throughout the state."
