NOTE: The Newton Mayoral Candidate that was arrested on Thursday wanted to tell his side of the story. Below is the original article then followed by Mr Speller's Side.
NEWTON: This afternoon Newton Police called an "officer in trouble" The Officer In Trouble call was when the Newton Police was arrested a former law enforcement officer and former candidate for Mayor of Newton. According to sources Darryl Speller, who lost the Mayor's race of Newton this past Tuesday got into a disagreement with the Water Department in Newton. Sources tell us the water department meter readers were riding their cart checking the water meters. Sources allege that Speller attempted to run over and then is alleged to have assaulted the water department meter readers. When Newton Police went to arrest Speller there was an altercation. The Newton Officer called an "officer in trouble" distress call. Multiple agencies within Dale County to include Dale County Sheriff Department rolled. After Speller was taken into custody he was transported to Dale Medical Center. Reports are the ambulance had to stop for additional law enforcement assistance while on the way to the hospital. Sources say some of the charges against Speller will be Assault and Reckless Endangerment. It is not known what else he might be charged with. Over the years Speller has served as a law enforcement officer in several South Dale County municipalities. He suffers from several medical conditions. He has been aggravated in the small town of Newton over several issues. Sometimes he lets those issues over ride his reasoning of common sense. Darryl - calm down man - the issues are not with all of this and your health!

Mr. Stokes please print my side of the story on you news site. Here is my side of the story.
First I didn’t try anyone off the road this was a setup. If you will check (edited Newton Chief of Police ) history records from Daleville and Dale Co. sheriff Dept. about beating a black male almost to death you will find your answer. There is a long history about Chief , (edited City Clerk ) & former Mayor , Chairman (edited Chairman of Council ). There have been records destroyed by the former Mayor. While the former Mayor was in office he daughter ran up an approx. 2000.00 dollar water bill and did not pay her water was never cut off. However if anyone did this they were cut off and had to pay 10.00 late fee & 25.00 more plus the water old water bill. The person accused of running up the water bill was the former Mayor’s daughter! I was beaten up by the Newton Police Chief for trying to get the records to show the public also thrown in jail. The Chief has his own set of laws. My wife & I tried to talk to Dale Co Sheriff about this but were denied by a Dale Co employee of the Sheriff Dept. several times. So please print this so the public will know. Also the former Mayor & City Clerk took a computer that belonged to the town of Newton without telling any one. It was found in Jacksonville Fla. where the former Mayor gave it to her grandson. It had personal Information about the town &citizen I have a copy of the letter from the former Mayor admitting they took it. I tried to press charges but was denied by the City Clerk. The Police Chief stated they swapped. I then ask if I could swap my vehicle for one of the town’s vehicles and I was told I would be put in jail. This is another one of the Chief laws. Please pass this along signed Darryl Speller

This article as updated and some of the names removed. Mr. Speller has the right to address his arrest and say what he wants to say. However some of the names are removed because the fight of Mr. Speller should not involve some of the others.
This is written to (1) the citizens of Newton (2) the citizens of Dale County, and in particular addressed specifically to Darryl Speller.
TO THE CITIZENS OF NEWTON AND CITIZENS OF DALE COUNTY
What you do in the upcoming runoff elections in the City of Newton is your business. However, please understand that Mr. Speller has filed many ethics complaints against the former Mayor. She has been cleared of each and every complaint. Mr. Speller continues to seek out issues and harass the former Mayor and some of the employees of the City of Newton. No answer will satisy him.
As to the complaints about Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson and members of Dale County Sheriff Department/ I have no issue of calling a agency to task when warranted. However, Sheriff Olson routinely bends over backwards to help people and talk to people. Your complaints are unfounded in the manner the Sheriff would not talk with you or the staff was rude. I will explain further as I address you specifically.
TO MR. DARRYL SPELLER
Darryl I have known you for many years. In fact when your legal issues began. Darryl understand, Sheriff Wally Olson and others will never be able to help you. The reason is, you can not be happy with the Town of Newton and whomever is in charge. You have axes to grind and those will always continue. They will continue because you can not leave anything alone.
There is more to life than mentally combating the issues you want to combat. This has affected your friendship with people in and around Newton. This has affected your health and your repuation. This has affected your family.
Darryl, the time has come for you to move on with life. A time to forget the issues that trouble you which are out of your control, a time to begin to enjoy life.
A long time ago I was told you can never reason with an unreasonable person. In many issues that YOU LET ( Darryl Speller ) allow to haunt you, are of your own doing. Give it up, enjoy your family, get better health wise, and move forward in life.
If you do not, TAKE NOTICE, you will find yourself in a situation that you will never be able to rewind and begin again.
While I am direct and to the point, rest assured Rickey Stokes has no axe to grind with you. I often times get into public disagreements and challenge persons in power. However, I can truthfully say there is NO ONE I hate and NO ISSUE which I harbor to the point that it will destroy myself and my family. That is my advise to you.
Good luck Darryl and cool it.
