A press conference was held at approximately 11:30 a.m. today on the steps of the Macon County Courthouse in support of VictoryLand as well as House Bill 154. Several elected officials from throughout Macon County were in attendance at the event including the Macon County Commission. The commission read a resolution of support that they recently had passed in support of Victoryland. Victoryland has been in operation in Macon County since 1984. It’s owner, Mr. Milton McGregor has provided millions of dollars in taxes revenue to the state of Alabama as well as to Macon County. What initially began as just a dog racing facility, has changed through the years to include electronic bingo. Macon County residents went to the polls and voted for bingo with 76 percent approval. Macon County Commission Chairman Louis Maxwell was the first to speak on the behalf of the Macon County Commission. He was followed up by commissioners Mike Roberts, Robert Berry, Albert Davis and Andrew Thompson. In addition to the commissioners speaking, Macon County Schools Superintendent of Education Dr. Gwendolyn Trawick Moore also spoke. She shared that Macon County was dealt with a 1.3 million loss of funds due to proration last year and 1.6 million loss of funds this year as well. She believes the number would have been double if not for Victoryland. Macon County would lose thirty percent of the county workforce if they were to lose Victoryland. This would include the loss of sheriff’s deputies and sanitation workers in Macon County.
