Vision Becoming A Reality In Joint Communications Center and Emergency Management Center

DOTHAN - HOUSTON COUNTY:    While we have had our differences of opinion, one thing Dothan Commissioner Albert Kirkland and I agreed on is almost complete.

A number of years ago Albert and I agreed we wanted a joint emergency operations center and communications center.

And this month Saliba Construction will probably turn the keys to the new center over. Then the moving will be in stages.

The Dothan Police and Dothan Fire Communications Center, Houston County Sheriff and Houston County Fire and EMS Communications Center, and Dothan - Houston County Emergency Management will occupy the building. Also the City of Dothan - Houston County Communications District will operate and own the building.

The City of Dothan - Houston County Communications District is managed by a nine member board. The board hires and manages a 911 Coordinator who has responsibility to carry out the board's directives. But the governing decision making is the nine member board.

A lot of planning and work has gone into the building project.

The nine member board approved an additional person to be hired by the nine member board. The position was advertised in The Dothan Eagle and applications were taken. The position is a E911 Building Technology Specialist. The closing date for applications was November 18.

I have made contact with the two applicants and scheduled interviews for the Building Technology Specialist position that we are looking to hire. I sent emails to the three (3) members of our Personnel Committee earlier this week and sent copies of the resumes for them to review. We have established an interview panel and will conduct the interviews next Wednesday. I am hoping to have the best candidate for your vote and approval at our meeting on Tuesday, December 13^th.

Also, we had the pre-final walk-thru on the building today. There are some minor things that need to be completed and touch ups, but I believe we are on schedule and will be able to accept the building at the final walk-thru next week.

So all is moving forward in filling this position. I look forward to the interview report from the three members of the 911 Board ( Dana Watts, Steve Parrish and Jeff Carlisle ) which were selected by the board to conduct the interviews this afternoon. According to Britain the hire will be made on the 13th as per her hiring authorities ( the board ) directives.

All is moving forward for the moving into the new facility with a smooth transition.

The City of Dothan - Houston County Communications District is a stand alone entity. The board does not operate under the guidance or policies of the City of Dothan or Houston County. All 911 funds are managed with a private accounting firm to remain neutral, fair, honest and with integrity to be fair to everyone throughout Houston County.

Another set of steps forward to better serving through emergency services.
