Dothan, Ala. –The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Wallace Community College a $10,000 grant to support adult literacy.

“The Wallace Community College Adult Education Department is dedicated to assisting adults who are interested in GED preparation and testing. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant will allow us to offset $100 toward the cost of the GED test to 66 eligible students,” said Linda Watson, Director of Adult Education at WCC.  The remaining funds will be used to purchase additional GED preparation materials.

The new four-section 2014 GED test is $30 per section, for a total of $120. With the grant applied to the cost, students will only be responsible for $20. The new computer-based GED test measures critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that colleges and employers are looking for.

“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

GED classes and materials are provided FREE of charge and are available to adults who are no longer enrolled in school. Classes are currently offered in Dothan, Eufaula, Abbeville, Ashford, Clayton, Headland, and Louisville.  GED graduates qualify for one free course at Wallace Community College.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $92 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than five million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
