Wallace Nursing Students Exceed State and National Licensing Exam Averages

Dothan, Ala.— Wallace Community College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and Practical Nursing (PN) graduates exceeded national and state board scores for the 2011-2012 school year. The Alabama Board of Nursing (ABON) recently confirmed the first-time pass rates for the NCLEX exam. NCLEX is an examination taken by all candidates for licensure in nursing. Graduates take either the NCLEX-RN or the NCLEX-PN exams.

ADN graduates averaged 93.1% for the period. The ABON reported a state average of 89.7%; the national average is 90.2%. PN graduates averaged 97.6% for the same period, against a state average of 90.7% and national average of 84.0%.

“NCLEX scores are reflective of the quality of our nursing programs and the cumulative efforts expended by our institution, faculty, healthcare facilities, and students,” said Kathy Buntin, coordinator, health sciences. “To exceed both the state and national averages on licensure exams is consistently a goal and one not easily attained.  We are so proud of the performance of these graduates.”

The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum at WCC is a five-semester program. Practical Nursing is designed for completion in three semesters.

Nursing and allied health programs at Wallace utilize the Simulation Center, a lab with state-of-the-art simulators that realistically depict patient symptoms. October marked the most active month since the Center opened in June 2010, with 805 student uses of simulators, a 56% increase from October 2011.

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and Practical Nursing programs are approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing and are fully accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The next review for the ADN program is scheduled for 2015; review for the PN program is scheduled for 2016.

Fall semester 2013 applications for both nursing programs will be available on March 1 at www.wallace.edu.
