Dothan, Ala. – David Russo has come home. Russo, the newly-named coach of the Wallace Community College-Dothan Lady Govs, is a former outfielder for the Govs baseball team. After 24 years of coaching baseball at universities and other community colleges, he quickly answered the call to return to the Wiregrass. His new passion is softball, and he spoke fondly of the return home and the shift in coaching responsibilities at a press conference on October 9.

“Coaching baseball and softball are so similar,” said Russo. “This is a great group of players who are committed to this team and our success. Wallace is so supportive of this program, and I am blessed to be a part of it.”

Russo coached baseball at several colleges and universities, most recently at Jefferson State Community College and Snead State Community College. His coaching journey has included multiple trips to regional championship tournaments, building an athletic program from the ground up, and being named “Coach of the Year” in 1993 and 1994 by the Association of Mideast Colleges.

Jackie Screws, dean of student affairs and the Sparks Campus, echoed Russo’s remarks about the team and the College’s support. “We want to welcome Coach Russo to the Wallace Community. He played baseball at the College some years ago and comes back to us with a wealth of experience,” said Screws.

In addition to a new coach the College is making big changes in the softball facility with improvements slated for the ball field and the stands. Ryan Spry, WCC director of student life, said that the renovations come at a great time for the College. “The work being done on the complex will enhance the experience for the players AND the fans,” Spry said.

Mackey Sasser, WCC athletic director and baseball coach, also formally welcomed Russo to the WCC family. While Russo played baseball for WCC in 1984-1985, Sasser played for the Govs in 1981-1983. “We knew each other: David followed my career, and I followed his after playing for Wallace,” said Sasser.  “He is a great addition to the Wallace athletic program.”

The Lady Govs players quickly endorsed Russo as their new coach. Sophomore Macayla Kelley from Slocomb said that Russo and the team connected from the start. “He loves the game just as much as we do and he understands our goals and why we have set the bar so high for ourselves and for Wallace,” she said. I truly believe that you will see us returning to state this year!”

Russo closed the press conference by acknowledging the team and the College. He then commented on his return to WCC by emotionally putting on his Wallace baseball cap, signaling his return with a smile.
