Dothan, Ala. – Teachers can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of their students, and one Wallace Community College instructor was recently honored for inspiring students in his science classes. WCC instructor Todd Tolar was selected as the Faculty Member of the Year at the recent Honors Day Convocation. What makes the award even more special is that students vote to select the recipient.

“I feel very humbled to receive this award. It holds a great deal of intrinsic value to me since it was awarded by WCC students,” said Tolar.

Tolar’s dedication to teaching is communicated in his mission statement. His aim is to “inspire” his students to set goals, perform at higher levels, be more efficient, use innovative study skills, achieve more, and be more successful than they ever dreamed possible. And Tolar certainly inspires his students to push harder to accomplish more in subjects that are very challenging.

“Mr. Tolar was an excellent choice for Faculty Member of the Year,” said Julie Fischer, division director of natural sciences. “His students state that not only is Mr. Tolar very knowledgeable but that he has a way of relating the material and providing examples so they can understand scientific principles and concepts,” said Fischer. “His students know that he truly cares for them and their success.”

Tolar began his career at Wallace as an adjunct faculty member in August, 2008. In 2009, he became a full-time biology instructor. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Troy University in Dothan. Tolar teaches Principles of Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology at WCC.
