The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) welcomes NASCAR fans to Talladega Weekend, culminating Sunday with the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.
“Talladega is a big draw each spring and fall, and we anticipate heavier-than-usual traffic along all routes leading to and from the Superspeedway,” said Col. John E. Richardson, director of the Department of Public Safety. "We encourage everyone to make safety a priority, to expect traffic delays, along with RVs, vehicles towing travel trailers and such.”
State Troopers will work with local law enforcement partners to ensure motorists obey all traffic laws during this busy weekend to reduce the risk of crashes, injuries and fatalities. Those who require assistance on Alabama’s roadways may call *HP (*47) on their cell phones to reach the nearest Trooper Post.
Richardson asks Alabama’s residents and visitors to:
• Avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Buckle up -- no matter how short the trip. (Occupants of all ages should use seat belts or child restraints when traveling by motor vehicles.)
• Focus on driving, and avoid such distractions as texting and using cell phones.
• Obey posted speed limits.
• Restrict access and closely monitor teens to prevent underage use of alcoholic beverages.
Talladega, Richardson said, is a fun weekend for race fans of all ages, “but we are counting on you, the motoring public, to help us ensure everyone is safe while traveling.”
