Where Alabama lands on Guns & Ammo's ranking of best states for firearm owners: Wake Up Call

According to an article on Al.com - There are two major schools of thought when it comes to gun ownership.

There are those who think the world would be a safer place if guns were removed from society. Then there are those who believe the only way to keep the peace is for law-abiding citizens to keep their firearms.

In Alabama, it seems more people fall into the second category than the first and the state's laws reflect those beliefs. That doesn't mean Alabama is the most gun-friendly state in the country, a title it misses by just a bit, according to a recent ranking by Guns & Ammo.

Alabama came in at number seven on its list of best states for gun owners. Its top 10 spot is due to strong laws protecting those who possess firearms, as well as the growing gun manufacturing industry in the state.

"Remington Outdoor Group (formerly Freedom Group) is in the process of consolidating nearly all of its operations to one big facility in Huntsville. Sweet Home Alabama will now be home to one of the largest firearm industry operations in the nation," Guns & Ammo noted.

It went on: "Obtaining a (concealed weapons) permit is quick and easy and does not require training. Gov. Bentley just signed a bill into law repealing the state's antiquated pistol registration scheme as well as the overly restrictive pistol possession law for minors, which is great news for Alabama residents. Alabama's Castle Doctrine law is very strong, and no restrictions are placed on tactical firearms or NFA items. Competitive shooting is popular in most of the state, and the Civilian Marksmanship Program's range in Anniston is fantastic.

By the way, Arizona was rated the most gun-friendly state; Washington, D.C. (yes, I know it's not a state but it was included in the list) as least.

Welcome to Wake Up Call. Let's see what's going on:

Boston says 'no' to Olympics

Boston has decided not to seek the 2024 Olympic games.

The city's bid had been plagued by missteps, including failure to garner support from key politicians in the city. The move leaves Los Angeles as the U.S.'s likely entry into the Olympic race.

Detractors said the Olympics would cost the city billions without substantial return.

The U.S. hasn't hosted a Summer Olympics since the Atlanta Games in 1996, or any Olympics since the Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002.

Interesting note on Mississippi

Our neighbors to the west are probably tired of ending up at the bottom of many rankings. But a recent one has Mississippi leading the pack in an interesting area: its mortgage loans.

Mississippi was ranked the best state for low mortgage rates. The state had the second-lowest rate for 15-year loans and 30-year mortgage rate below the national average at 3.764 APR. Another benefit is the state's low home prices: the average listing price in Mississippi is $233,639.

The worst state for mortgage loans is Hawaii. Not only does the island state have high mortgage rates, it also has a staggering average house price - $1.019 million.

Hey Trump, this is directed at you

As if Donald Trump wasn't causing the GOP establishment enough headaches, his recent comments that he would consider running as a third-party candidate if necessary was the last thing Republican leadership wanted to hear.

Now, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said he thinks GOP presidential candidate should pledge not to run as a third party candidate.

"I think everyone understands that if Hillary Clinton's going to get beat, she's going to get beat by a Republican. And most people that run for president run to win, and if our candidates want to win, then they'll have to run as a Republican," Priebus said.

Priebus also seemed to wave the white flag at the outspoken billionaire mogul turned politician.

Trump is "speaking out to people that are really frustrated with Washington," he said.

What happened when someone held a heterosexual pride parade

A Seattle blogger's plans for a heterosexual pride parade didn't go very far last weekend when no one showed up. Anthony Rebello had invited more than 2,000 people to attend the event planned for Seattle's Capitol Hill last weekend. More than 150 responded they would attend. In the end, only one person – Rebello himself - showed up.

The event, Rebello said was created "in the name of equality [and] equal rights ... to celebrate our right to be heterosexual, and to encourage younger heterosexuals that they should be proud of their heterosexuality."
