According to WDHN's Ken Curtis: The announcement by Dothan police chief Greg Benton that he plans to retire May 1 opens the door for others to seek the position.

Here is a list of possible contenders and those who won’t seek the job in random order:

Major Steve Parrish—A 30-plus year veteran of the department and second in command handling many day to day duties.  He began work as a jail employee and rose through the ranks. Parrish said he is considering applying but wants to discuss the matter with his family.

Captain Carlton “Bubba” Ott---Serves as commander of the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Ott said his decision hinges on what Parrish does. “I fully support Steve Parrish and do not intend to apply unless he decides not to.”

Captain Stacy Robinson—Currently serves as member of command staff in charge of training and other services. He said it’s too early to decide if he’ll seek the job.

Captain Will Benny---Currently serves as member of command staff in charge of Administrative Services. Benny said he will not seek the job.

Captain Todd David---Serves as member of department’s command staff overseeing the Patrol Division. A text seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Col. Jim Smith---Director of Public Safety in Cottonwood and Coordinator of Public Safety for Troy University Dothan. Smith is an author, holds a doctorate in criminal justice, and is a former captain on the Dothan force. He does not plan to apply.

John R. Powell---Former Dothan police chief who resigned in 2009. He took a state law enforcement administrative job in Florida before mounting a second unsuccessful attempt for Escambia County (FL) County Sheriff. He has applied for multiple police chief jobs since. Powell could not immediately be reached for comment.

Chief Stan Devane---A retired Dothan officer who later worked as a Probation and Parole officer for the state of Alabama. Currently, Devane is police chief of Elberta, AL and current applicant for a similar job in Ozark. Devane said he likely won’t apply for chief’s position in Dothan.

Keith Gray---Former Dothan police captain who was terminated in 2013. He currently has federal lawsuit against the city alleging wrongful termination. He will not apply saying “I'm sure they have pre-selected (Steve) Parrish as Benton's successor from the first day Benton took office.”

Andy R. Hughes---Former Houston County Sheriff who is now administrator with the Department of Homeland Security. He has no interest in applying.
