DALE COUNTY: This is an example of why parents and the public have no or very little respect for government officials. This is the Dale County Board of Education.
This is not about the issue the parent wanted to talk to the school board about. It is about the way the elected officials treat the public.
A Dale County School parent called and wanted to talk to the Dale County School Board. The parents were told to be at the meeting. The parents showed up at 5:15 PM for the 5:30 PM meeting. The meeting lasted only 9 minutes because I came in the door at 5:39 PM and met school board members leaving the meeting. The parent told me they were told they could not speak because they were not on the agenda. They would have to call and schedule to be placed on the agenda before they could speak. The next meeting is one month away.
OF SPECIAL NOTE: Board and Commissions have the privileges of the floor where the public speaks when the meeting is not in session.
Example: The Houston County Commission Meeting - the public speaks at the Administrative Meeting and not the Commission Meeting. The reason, there is no official minutes or record maintained at the Administrative Meeting so there is always deniability. You can only speak to the commission on the day the record is kept concerning items on the agenda.
Example: The Dothan City Commission Meeting - the public speaks at the end of an Administrative Meeting and can only speak during a meeting on items on the agenda. Again, because there is no records kept of what the public speaks about during an Administrative Meeting. This practice was before Mike Schmitz became Mayor!
Example: Watch a Henry County Commission Meeting - they allow the public to speak, then elected officials and department heads. They then call the meeting to order, call the roll, establish a quorum and open the meeting. The reason, what the public, elected officials and department heads say, it is not on the record.
Dale County School Board - rude and did not allow parent to speak.
NOW THE ISSUE THEY WANTED TO SPEAK ON
The male child who is, I think 6 years old, has been suspended because of dress code policy violations. The youngster wears plastic ear rings. His dad has ear rings.
On several occasions the Midland City Elementary School Principal has called the parent to come to the school and get the ear rings. The parent continues to send the child to school with the ear ring. The principal of Midland City Elementary School has suspended the child. The mother thinks for one month until the next school board meeting.
The school board is sending a letter to the parent so the child is not suppose to be suspended for one month. However, the mother vows her child can wear the ear ring, because it is discrimination if they allow persons a particular sex to wear them, girls, and not the other sex to wear them.
Rather than address the issue at the school board meeting, the board spit in the parents face by not letting the parents speak. When the parent called and whoever answered the phone told them when the meeting was.
You know when you get to be an elected official, you are then royalty and they will only speak to you or allow your to speak to them or kiss the bottom of their garments come election time. Thus the way the parents are treated at the Dale County School Board Meeting of only 9 minutes tonight.
NOTE: This article is not meant to say I agree or disagree with the parents position. It is meant to describe the parents issue and to let the elected officials know, they are just above dog manure and not royalty. Because often times they are just below the dog manure. Now treat people right, and then they will respect you. Until then, you deserve to be treated like dog manure!!!
