High school leaders from across Alabama met in Columbiana, AL, for the Alabama Cooperative Youth Conference – or Co-op Boot Camp – July 10-12. Five of those students were from the Wiregrass area sponsored by Wiregrass Electric Cooperative.
Those students are pictured on the right: Matthew Skinner (Geneva County High), Savannah Frederick (Geneva High), Madison McCollough (Wicksburg), Cody Joiner and Zachary Sullivan (Geneva County High).
Organized by the Alabama Council of Cooperatives, the conference is sponsored annually by the State Department of Education and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University, Farm Credit cooperatives, Alabama Farmers Cooperative and Dairy Farmers of America.. Participants at the conference focused on how cooperatives operate in the economic system. The event also provided for leadership development with sessions emphasizing leadership, citizenship and careers.
Among the scheduled activities were group divisions forming an imaginary co-op and developing employee and marketing plans. The conference culminated with group co-op presentations.
“These students have proven their leadership abilities in each of their schools, and Wiregrass Electric is proud to sponsor them to the Youth Conference,” said Michael S. McWaters, CEO of Wiregrass Electric. “I congratulate each one for representing their schools and Wiregrass Electric well.”
