In April 2014, the Wiregrass Wounded Veterans Committee (WWVC) obtained a like-new Shark Quickie hand-powered recumbent bicycle from CW3 and Mrs. Tony Vilardo. Vilardo was no longer able to ride the bike and wanted it to go to a another wounded veteran who needed it. The Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Command Warrior Transition Unit located at Anniston, Alabama informed the WWVC that Sgt.Eric Kepler required a hand-powered bike to continue with his adaptive fitness rehabilitation.
Sgt. Kepler, a member of the Alabama Army National Guard, had contracted a disease in Afghanistan that limits the use of his lower extremities. Kepler credits his use of the hand-powered bike with his recovery to the point where he can ride an upright bike. He and his wife Susan will be in Enterprise to participate in the Enterprise Lions Club’s 13th Annual Boll Weevil 100 Bicycle Ride and 10K Run on Saturday, May 9, beginning at 7:30 a.m. from the First United Methodist Church on Main Street in Enterprise.
At 10:00 am, on May 8, Kepler will be fitted for a new upright bike at Montgomery Multisport, located in the Fort Rucker Post Exchange. Enterprise Edward Jones Financial Representatives Joan Newman, Sam Kyser and Reid Clark purchased Kepler’s new bike and Clark will ride in the Boll Weevil 100 with him. While Kepler is riding, his wife and Diego, his service dog, will be participating in the 3K Fun Run.
The bike will be presented to Kepler at the Mayor's Welcome Dinner for the wounded veterans that will be held at 6:00 pm on May 8, at Hillcrest Baptist Church. (A Media Table will be available at this event.) The Kepler and Vilardo families plan to meet sometime during the Boll Weevil 100 weekend.
Montgomery Multisport provided the bike at their cost and modified it to meet Kepler's requirements at no cost. They will also service and prepare the hand-powered bicycle at no cost so that WWVC can offer it to another recovering wounded veteran.
