Yesterday our Uncle, Doy Jon Stokes, passed away after a courageous battle with a lung illness.  Uncle Doy was the last of our daddy's brothers and sisters to pass away.  His daughter Estelane shared with me (Sandra) as we were by his bedside that he told her he was ready.  Uncle Doy enjoyed his family and friends.  A few weeks back Estelane, Richard, Sydnee and Rich took him to the Florida Keys for a week, they even took him for a boat ride.  He was determined to keep as active as possible between hospital stays.  Our family has witnessed that same determination in all of his brothers and sister.

Our prayers are with his daughter, son-in-love and grandchildren and his special friend Quinn.

Mr. Doy Jon Stokes, of Dothan, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015. He was 79.

Born January 4, 1936 in Wicksburg, Alabama to the late Pilly and Alice Davis Stokes, Mr. Stokes served his country in the United States Air Force. He travelled extensively with the Air Force, having lived in Alabama, Florida, Alaska, Texas, Mississippi, Tripoli, North Africa, Korea, England, and Germany. He retired from Civil Service at Fort Rucker having worked in radar navigational maintenance.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Genolyne Alma Collins Stokes; his brothers, Rudolph Stokes, Curtis Stokes, and Max Stokes; and his sister, Jeannie Golden.

Survivors include his daughter, Estelane (Richard) O’Donnell; his grandchildren, Richard S. O’Donnell and Sydnee J. O’Donnell; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Sunday, August 23, 2015 from the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Clayton Nowell and Brother Billy Rich officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 2 PM until 3 PM Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home one hour prior to service time.
