Have you been seeing "Police K9" cars all around town? If you have been out and about this week you probably have! The DPD K9 Unit has just completed the 20th Annual Canine Seminar. This was a huge success and we would like to share with you what some of the benefits of such an event include for our teams and those who join us year after year. Some of these include; networking, exchanging training tips and techniques, exposure for canines to real world scenarios that they may encounter while on patrol, advanced narcotic training, helicopter supported tracking training, advanced apprehension training and so many others. One such exposure training technique that stood out to our teams was the mission to enter a building filled with smoke with an activated alarm and work through these issues to locate and apprehend an armed suspect. “Out of the box” training such as this allows handlers to have a controlled scenario in which to detect any uncertainties their partner may display in an enhanced sensory environment. Detections of such if any are then subsequently trained through to achieve maximum performance on the streets.

2016 Attendees and Competitions
This year’s seminar involved 29 teams representing a variety of law enforcement and military personnel currently working canines. These teams travelled from Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Competitions offered were the Hard Dog competition, Fast Dog competition, the Narcotic Scramble and Top Patrol Dog.

2016 Trainers
Canine trainers for this seminar were Jason Stanzey, Houston K9 Academy, Captain Beaudry, Montgomery County S.O., Sgt. Wozniak, Dothan Police Department, Paul Leslie, DeSoto County S.O. and and special thanks to another trainer whose current mission requires he not be named.

Community Impact
The Dothan Police Department would like to thank our local business owners for opening so many training areas in our city and welcoming these teams. Many owners stated they enjoyed having the law enforcement presence at their businesses and enjoyed getting the insiders view of how we train our teams. Additionally, local media expressed thanks for the invitation to attend training sessions which in turn brought the teams into our community’s homes.

Other great moments can be seen in attached photos and remember if you would like to see our teams in action, you can find us at this years National Night Out coming summer 2016.
