Academy Sports+Outdoors Sponsors Steak Grilling Competition For Kids in 2014

One of Dothan’s newer sporting goods retailers, Academy Sports+Outdoors is helping kids learn the art of grilling this fall at the 2014 Kids Que competition held in conjunction with PorktoberQue. The event will take place on Saturday, September 27 at the Houston County Farm Center, near where the professional barbecue teams are competing. Best of all, the $10 entry fee gets you $30 worth of goods!

Students will be divided into two categories, based on age. The “Little Grillers” are students in the 8-12 age group, and the “Teen Grillers” are aged 13-18 (age calculated on 9/1/14 for contest). Best of all is the fact that Academy Sports+Outdoors will provide each contestant with a tabletop grill they can use for the competition and keep after the event, as well as half a bag of charcoal they can use for the Kids Que. Local restaurant Fatbacks will provide each competitor with two steaks to cook. Kids Que contestants only have to turn in one steak, and may eat the other steak after they have turned in their entry.

Because all of the steaks will be the same cut of beef and approximately the same size, competitors must use their creativity to season and garnish their steak. Though garnish is not required, just about anything edible can be used as garnish including greenery, grilled vegetables or sauces. All cooking (including any sauces or grilled vegetables) must be done by the competitor, and cooking by adults will result in disqualification.

The event is held at PorktoberQue, Dothan’s Oktoberfest and barbecue celebration, and all competitors signing up for the Kids Que also receive two general admission tickets into the event so they and a parent can attend.  The cooking will be done in the morning of Saturday September 27th and awards will be on the main stage in the early afternoon. There is a cash award for first and second in each age group, and trophies for the top fie in each division. Space is limited to the first 50 to sign up for the contest.

In preparation for the Kids Que, Academy Sports+Outdoors will be holding grilling clinics for kids at their Dothan stores on Saturday September 13 and 20, with Dothan Country Club chef du cuisine Joe Whaley. Chef will discuss grill temperature management, how to create grill marks, and grilling safety among other things.

To register for the Kids Que or to learn more, visit PorktoberQue.com or call The Main Event at (334) 699-1475
