HOUSTON COUNTY:    Tonight around 8 PM, the Houston County Sheriff radio cracked and you heard, "3801 10-8".

The number 3801 is Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza. The numbers "10-8" signals "In Service - Ready for duty".

Following the crackling of the radio, one person called me and one person text me: "Sheriff Valenza is on the streets working with the deputies of Houston County Sheriff Department".

Sheriff Valenza notified the shift commander, I am on duty to patrol and back up the deputies. Sheriff Valenza is reported to say, I am not here to command, but here to allow the deputies time to call out of service to their families and give them time they need for gifts or whatever they need to do for their families for Christmas.

With that said, we have heard Sheriff Valenza backing up deputies. Sheriff Valenza moments ago made a traffic stop on Highway 123 in Wicksburg. When the dispatched asked Sheriff Valenza, "do you need a backup", Sheriff Valenza replied "negative".

Sheriff Valenza's patrol vehicle comes equipped with police equipment. He has undercover blue lights and siren, actually a police radio to include Sheriff Department, Dothan Police, Alabama State Troopers and other agencies. Sheriff Valenza, each and every morning before 7 AM, you can hear him call in on the radio, "3801 10-8".

Those very words, Sheriff Valenza himself getting out and working. Not attempting to command - he can but not attempting to take over from the Supervisors, connects the command staff, the Sheriff, to the men and women who wear the badge. It makes the Sheriff also connect to the community. It also allows the Sheriff to be fully aware of the community and what goes on.

With that knowledge, as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of Houston County, it allows the Sheriff to better lead the department into the future.

The other Sheriff's on the radios I monitor, to include Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts, Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward, Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton, Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson, Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox, it is common to hear the Sheriff's on the radio.

Christmas 2013, Dothan Police Patrol Commander Captain David Jay ( now retired ) read "Twas The Night Before Christmas" on the police radio. Captain Jay would read about one minute and then ask the communications for continued clearance. Captain Jay made sure no emergency traffic existed as he attempted to connect to the men and women working Christmas on the streets.
