January is blood donor awareness month

As we move into 2013 and think about the positive changes we wish to make in the coming year, here is a suggestion from LifeSouth: donate blood.

Here in The South Alabama district,  LifeSouth needs nearly 1,000 donors every week to meet the needs of our local hospitals. Our donors give with the understanding that they could be helping their neighbors, their friends and their family members. A blood donation is a gift to our entire community.

January is set aside as Blood Donor Awareness month, and these donors can use some help. Nationally only about 4 percent of Americans donate blood regularly, and as our population ages in this country, the need for blood is climbing. Currently it’s estimated that 1 out of every 7 patients entering a hospital will require a blood transfusion.

Donating is a simple procedure and nearly painless. It takes only about 45 minutes from the time you step aboard a bloodmobile until you’ll step off. If you are already a donor, think about donating one more time this year. Donors can give as often as every 56 days, and many in our community make it a point to donate as frequently as possible. To these donors and to all who gave blood in 2012, we say thanks, and we hope to see you again in 2013. And, if you’ve never donated, let us show you how simple it can be to make a lifesaving difference.

Sincerely,
