Allen Dean Haynes, age 76, died Tuesday, March 1, at Noland Hospital in Dothan.  Dean was born on February 23rd, 1940 in Clyde, North Carolina, to Allen Thurman Haynes and Alice Maria Hawkins Haynes.  He graduated from Clyde High School where he played football and enjoyed the company of his favorite cousin Joe B. Haynes and best friend Ray Jackson, among others.  He received his B. S. from Western Carolina University and then taught junior high students and coached football four years in Sanford, NC.  He then attended Appalachian State University where he received his M. A. in History.  In 1967 he rode with his buddy Bobby Rowe to Enterprise where Bobby was interviewing for a history teaching job.  Dean also ended up accepting a job teaching history at Enterprise State Junior College, where he taught until his retirement in 1996.  Many students over the course of his 29 years at ESJC will attest to the rigor and interest of his western civilization and geography lessons.  He counted many of the faculty and staff members among his closest friends, and he especially enjoyed playing guitar and singing with the Red Neck Review, canoeing and fishing on Pea River, and hosting backyard parties.  Dean traveled to many states in the United States, as well as in Europe and Canada, but he was always most at home sitting on the front porch of his mountain cabin in Clyde with a cup of coffee, maybe strumming his dulcimer and singing.

In addition to his parents, Dean is predeceased by three brothers, Robert Fields Haynes, Sammy Neal Haynes, and Alden Haynes, as well as an infant sister, Therma Jane Haynes.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kathy Sanders Haynes of Enterprise, his daughters, Kathryn Alice Haynes (Mark Hutson) of Pittsburgh, PA, and Bridgett Richeson (Taylor) of Watertown, NY and by step-son, Thomas Andrew Lavender (Dixie) of Roeton, and step-daughter, Virginia Lavender Durham (Griff) of Jacksonville, FL Granddaughters, include Addie and Anna Jane Lavender, Josie and June Durham, and Abigail, Breanna, and Emily Filson.  Also surviving are sisters, Sue Martel (George) of Cleveland, TN, and Carolyn Wollard (Bob) of Hamptonville, NC, brother, Wick Haynes (Katy) of Raleigh, NC, sisters-in-law, Betty Haynes, of Clyde, NC, and Chris Haynes of Sevierville, TN, and brothers-in-law, Kenneth Sanders (Susanne) of Roeton and Carl Sanders (Donna) of Roeton.  Numerous nieces and nephews and other loving Haynes and Sanders family members as well as numerous friends survive, including special friends Harold McKnight and Dean Craig as well as numerous former ESJC co-workers and First Baptist Church members and staff, especially Pat Howard’s Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home in Enterprise, AL, on Friday, March 4, from four to six in the evening.  Graveside service will be at 10:00 Saturday, March 5, at Roeton Baptist Church Cemetery in Roeton, AL, with Reverend Ben Bowden officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dean Haynes scholarship fund at Enterprise State Community College, PO Box 1300, Enterprise, AL 36331.
