ANNETTE  HARRIS  SHIRAH


 


MIDLAND CITY. . .Annette Harris Shirah, a resident of Midland City, died early Saturday morning, February 15, 2014, in the emergency room of a Dothan hospital. She was 78.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 18, 2014, in the Midland City Baptist Church with Reverend Taylor Hodges officiating. Burial will follow in the Midland City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Monday at the mortuary in Headland.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Midland City Baptist Church, P.O. Box 694, Midland City, AL 36350.


            Annette Harris Shirah, born September 20, 1935 in Blue Mountain, Alabama, moved to Houston County, Alabama in 1940, graduated from Rehobeth High School in 1954. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hamilton M. Harris and Hattie Davis Harris, four siblings who died at birth, and a sister, Naomi Ruth Farmer.  


            Annette moved to Midland City in 1961, joined the Midland City Baptist Church, taught Sunday School, Discipleship Training and sang in the choir. She served as President of the Midland City Historical Society, authored two books, “A Saturday Road”, and “Hattie”. Annette wrote the book “Midland City; The First Hundred Years” on the occasion of the town’s centennial in 1990. One time correspondent for the Southern Star, former member of the Dale County Human Resources Board, former secretary, and member of the Dale Baptist Association Historical Committee. Annette was an American Red Cross volunteer, and a former member of the Dale County Association of Day Care Workers and Supervisors. She was a member and Vice-President of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Stonewall Jackson Chapter 667. Annette owned and operated the Sugar Plum Day Care Center in Midland City for forty years.


            Surviving relatives include her husband, Clarence E. Shirah, Midland City; two daughters, Cynthia (Teri) Shirah Burchfield (Steve), Panama City, FL; Lauri E. Shirah O’Toole (Joseph), Dothan; two sons, Keith E. Shirah (Trudy), Lawrenceville, GA; and Kendall C. Shirah, Wicksburg, AL; four grandchildren, Nikki Richardson (Bryan), Robert Terry Hughes (Sandra), Sean K. Shirah (Hannah), and Christopher Shirah (Jessica); seven great-grandchildren, Brittany Richardson, Savannah Richardson, Jeremy Hughes, Robert Hughes, Emma Shirah, Jackson Shirah, and Noah Shirah; a nephew, Jonathan Farmer; a great-niece, Haley Farmer, great-nephews, Stephen and Christian Farmer.
