NEWVILLE. . .Arthur Lee Brannon (Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army, Retired), a resident of Newville, died early Tuesday morning, March 17, 2015, at his home. He was 91.


            Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, (C.D.T.) March 19, 2015, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating and a eulogy to be given by a nephew, Gene Brannon.  Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow at 2:30 PM. (E.D.T.) Thursday in the Ft. Mitchell Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, Alabama. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:00 until 10:30 A.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Vivian B. Adams School, 2047 Stuart Tarter Road, Ozark, AL 36360 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mr. Brannon was born in Newville and was reared in the Old Center community of Henry County, son of the late Morgan Arthur Brannon and Mary Ella Snell Brannon. In 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served his country in World War II.  Mr. Brannon was a 1947 graduate of Newville High School and was also a graduate of Chipola Jr. College. He also served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War and retired in 1971 with the rank of Command Sergeant Major after a total of twenty-three years of service. Mr. Brannon returned to Newville in 1970 where he was self-employed as a cattle farmer. He was a member of the Newville Baptist Church. Mr. Brannon was preceded in death by four brothers, Marvette Brannon, Perry Brannon, Felix Brannon, and Terry Brannon, and also a sister, Mary Ella Brannon Hughes.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Sallie Roney Brannon, Newville; two daughters, Susan Brannon Owens (Sidney), Newville; Nancy Brannon Haney (Bob), Gulf Breeze, FL; a son, Thomas A. Brannon (Chrissi), Dothan; a sister, Jane Brannon Murphy (George), Abbeville; six grandchildren, Erin Owens Stevens (Brock), Ryan Owens, Katie Haney, Heather Haney, Madison Brannon, and Miles Morgan Brannon; three great-grandchildren , Carter Stevens, Reagan Stevens and Preston Owens Stevens, and a great-grandson, Brannon Bradshaw Stevens to be born in August.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be the nephews, Greg Brannon, Steve Brannon, Lee Murphy, Matthew Hughes, Phil Shelley, and John Walden Roney.  


            The family would like to express their appreciation to Covenant Hospice, including Jessica Bures, Tasha Tyree, Sara McKee and Sonya Snow for the loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Brannon during his illness.
