BERTHA  ELLEN  MEDLEY  ESPY

 

HEADLAND…Bertha Ellen Medley Espy, a resident of Headland, died Monday afternoon, January 27, 2014. She was 95.

            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in the Headland United Methodist Church with Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in the Headland Methodist Church Family Life Center.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland United Methodist Church Building Fund, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345, or to Alacare Hospice, 3379 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305 or to the Blanche R. Solomon Memorial Library, 17 Park Street, Headland, AL 36345.

            Mrs. Espy was born in the Brown’s Crossroads community of Dale County, and reared in Headland, daughter of the late James Owen Medley and Vinnie Ellen Brown Medley. She formerly lived in Midland City before returning to Headland in 1982. Mrs. Espy was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Midland City United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and served on various committees in both churches as well as community activities.

            Mrs. Espy was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Espy, six brothers, Ralph Daughtry, Fletcher Medley, Tom Medley, Woodrow Medley, Stough Medley, and Richard Medley, Sr.

            Surviving relatives include her nieces and nephews, Ralph Palmer Daughtry, Gene Daughtry (Ellen), Tommy Daughtry (Linda), Guy Medley, Ray William Medley (Margaret), Carolyn Matthias (Roy), Janet Medley Richards (Chuck), Martha Ellen Medley Granberry (Tim), Jim Medley (Lisa), Richard Medley, Jr. (Teresa), Pamela Medley Hodgkins, and Roger Medley; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, and one great-great-great-niece; a sister-in-law, Veryle Medley. Mrs. Espy was more than an Aunt to each of her nieces and nephews, and held a special place in their hearts.

            Serving as active pallbearers will be Roger Medley, Richard Medley, Jr., Chuck Richards, Tim Granberry, Jim Medley, Ray William Medley, Roy Matthias, and Guy Medley.

            The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Roland Spedale, and his nurse, Kimberly Robinson, AlaCare Hospice, her nurses, Angela Armstrong, and Meredith Trammell, Chaplain Phillip Durr, First Light Sitting Service, and caregivers, Janetta Peters, Danyelle Morgan, Michelle Knight, and Star Burton for the loving kindness shown to Mrs. Espy during her illness.
