Bill Nelson Ross of Odenville, Alabama, formally of Hartford, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 20, 2016. He was 76.


Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Monday, May 23, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Hartford, Alabama with Dr. Max McKinney officiating. Interment will follow at Hartford City Cemetery with Jimmy Bottoms of Bottoms Garden Chapel directing. The family will receive friends at the church at 1PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Ross requested donations be made to the Youth Department of First United Methodist Church of Hartford.


Mr. Ross was a 1958 graduate of Geneva County High School in Hartford. While in school, he was named the basketball team’s most valuable player in the district tournament and garnered All-State honors as well. He signed a basketball scholarship with Auburn University and earned three varsity letters. He was a member of the 1960 SEC Championship team. He was elected captain of the 1962 team. He coached the 1963 AU freshman team. He coached at the high school level and taught math for five years before entering the private sector. Interested in the food industry, Mr. Ross operated several restaurants before moving to the Birmingham area where he was affiliated with the Birmingham Racing Association for the past 20 years. Mr. Ross was inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Coley and Helen Ross and his sister, Florre Jo Ross.


Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Ross, Odenville; two daughters, Dianne (Scott) Burch, Fairhope and Vivian Kay Ross, Douglasville, GA; four grandchildren, Kali Martin, Philip Martin, Austin Burch, and Katie Burch; one brother Gilbert (Virginia) Ross, Dothan; Rebecca’s extended family; and several nieces and nephews.
