Billy Alford Murdock, age 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday evening, April 5, 2015. He was Born July 6, 1933, in Enterprise Alabama to Robert and Ethel Murdock. He is predeceased by his parents and by his siblings, Wilson, Charles and Pete Murdock and Hazel Bullard.

Billy married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Marguerita Huey, who preceded him in death in 1997.  Billy and “Marita” together served the town they loved in countless ways for four decades, touching many lives in the process.   Billy’s appreciation for his beloved Enterprise was evident in his service to her as a city councilman for 16 years, but his volunteer efforts regularly went beyond that.  From his childhood, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Enterprise and he later served the church for many years as a deacon.  He was an active member of the Lions Club.   After serving in the National Guard as a young man, Billy later was active in the Bogardus S. Cairns chapter  of the Association of the United States Army (the AUSA) and eventually served two terms as its President.

Known and respected for his honesty, integrity and humility, as well as his easy smile, Billy brought these traits to bear not only in his personal relationships, but also in work for over 40 years as a homebuilder and realtor.   He also served as President of the Coffee-Geneva Board of Realtors.

Billy attended Coffee County public schools and Auburn University.  An outstanding athlete, he was a three sport letterman in football, basketball and baseball for the Enterprise Wildcats. His love of athletics continued as he officiated both football and basketball throughout southeast Alabama for a number of years and was a lifelong member of the Quarterback Club.

So very important to Billy were his friends.  A treasured lifetime of relationships included “the Bridge Club” and, in more recent years, his beloved  “Coffee Club” and  Supper Club . Many hours of laughter and tall tales were shared and sweet memories made with these special families of friends.

A devoted father and grandfather, Billy Murdock, affectionately known as “Granddaddy,” spent countless hours encouraging and cheering on his family in their endeavors. As an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, Granddaddy shared these loves with his grandchildren.  His greatest legacy however was his life of faith and love of Christ, and a selflessness and servant’s heart that testified to God’s love for us.  His hope and joy was supremely set, not in the accomplishments and pleasures of this world, but in life everlasting through God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Those left to celebrate Granddaddy’s life and to cherish his memory are his son Glenn Murdock (Margaret) and daughters Susan Horn ( Paul) and Shawn Nantz (Thom); his five grandchildren Grant Shaw ( Stacy), Adam Shaw ( Jackie ), Emily Menendez (Matthew), Bailey Murdock ( Emily),  and John Taylor Murdock; and his five great grandchildren: Becker, Thomas, Anna Grace, Jackson and Marianne Hope.

The Murdock family would like to thank all of the caregivers at Brookdale Place for their loving kindness and tender care since 2013.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, April 9,  from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at  Searcy Funeral Home, in Enterprise.  A celebration of Billy Murdock’s life and legacy will be held at the First Baptist Church of Enterprise Alabama on Friday April 10th at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the International Mission Board, PO Box 6767, Richmond, Virginia 23230-0767 or to the building fund of the First Baptist Church, 302 North Main Street, Enterprise Alabama 36330.
