Bobby Gene Kirkland, 64, of Ashford, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3pm on Friday, July 22, 2011 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Mike Shirah officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1-3pm on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303 or to the Faith Riders of Memphis Baptist Church 4595 Eddins Road, Dothan, AL 36301.

Mr. Kirkland was born in Houston County, Alabama to the late Hughey Earl Kirkland and Lillie Mae Kirkland on February 3, 1947. He was a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church and an honorary member of Faith Riders of Memphis Baptist Church.

Mr. Kirkland was preceded in death by his brother Hosea Earl Kirkland and one sister-in-law, Corina Blackmon.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie Blackmon Kirkland; a daughter, Lisa Marie Kirkland and Angie Smith of Ville Platte, LA; sons, David Earl Kirkland and Sabrina of Webb, AL and Neal Nunnelly and Catherine of Cullman, AL; five grandchildren, Jacob, Justin, Michaela Kirkland of Webb, AL and Josh and Chellcee Nunnelly of Cullman, AL; a brother, Billy Ray Kirkland and Joanne of Newville, AL; a sister, Elizabeth Dialane Temples and Billy of Blakely, GA; three brothers-in-law, Johnny Blackmon and Carolyn of Elba, AL, Jerome Blackmon of New Brockton, AL, and Jimmy Blackmon and Carol of Jacksonville, FL; a sister-in-law, Janet Dawkins and Jerry of Ashford, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to say a special thanks to his caregiver, Tina and his nurses, Cynthia, Carla, and Loretta of Covenant Hospice and to his lifelong friends Paul Mack and Debbie Davidson.
