Mrs. Bonnie Penn McKay of Dothan, Alabama, died June 1, 2015 at Flowers Hospital. She was 89. She had been a resident of Extendicare Health and Rehabilitation in Dothan.


Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Johnny Fain and Pastor Jack Wingate conducting the service. Private graveside services will be follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Robert Byrd with Sunset Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 1:30pm until 2pm Thursday.


Mrs. McKay was born May 14, 1926 to Hubbard and Carrie Penn in Dale County, Alabama. After graduating from Midland City High School, she attended Auburn University where she was an active member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Mrs. McKay married Emmett Winston McKay, Jr. on May 25, 1951. They were married for 58 years. She graduated with a major in elementary education from Troy State University. Over a thirty year teaching career, she taught in Dale, Henry, and Barbour Counties, retiring her teaching career with the Dothan City Schools. During her professional career, she was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators. She also belonged to the Barbour County chapter. After moving to Dothan, she belonged to the Alpha Rho Chapter.


Prior to Mrs. McKay’s illness she was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan where she was on the library staff. She was also a very active member of her Sunday School Class. Mrs. McKay was a member of the Forsythia Garden Club.


Mrs. McKay was preceded in death by her husband Emmett McKay, her son-in-law, Mike Grantham, and her brother-in-law, Leonard Johnson.


Mrs. McKay is survived by her daughters, Claire McKay Grantham, Dothan, AL and Blanche McKay McIntyre and her husband Gordon, Birmingham, AL; her beloved grandchildren, Michael Winston Grantham and his wife Sarah, Nashville, TN, Anne Winston McIntyre, and Claire Gordon McIntyre, both of Birmingham, AL; her great-grandchildren, Knox Grantham and Emmaline Grantham, both of Nashville, TN; her brother, Dalton H. Penn and her sister, Jannie S. Johnson, both of Dothan; a nephew Fred McKay, her two nieces, JoAnn McKay and June Asbury and a special niece and nephew, Lynn (Bobby) Johnson and Tim (Karla) Johnson.
