Obituary: Brenda G. “Breezy” Miller

Most knew her as “Breezy”.

Brenda Gaile McCurry Miller, was born 5 February 1944 in Gulston, a coal mining camp in Eastern Kentucky, to Fred and Margaret McCurry.  Her daddy gave her the nickname from a local comic strip named Brenda Breeze.  Her relationship with The Lord was established in a little Christian Church up the holler from the house.

She graduated from Clay County High School, Manchester, KY in 1962, then went to Western Kentucky State College in Bowling Green, KY.

While at Bowling Green, she met Walter Barclay Miller, who dated Breezy’s roommate.  For 2 years they were just good friends.  In 1965, they looked at each other differently, and after four dates were married 25 September 1965.

Walter Barclay joined the Army in the middle of the Vietnam War.  As a wartime Army bride with all the inherent struggles, Breezy adapted well.  They moved 29 times, including once to Enterprise.  Along the way, born in military hospitals, daughters Leah and Jennifer joined the family.  The Army separated the family 8 of 20 years.  Some years were very tough, but Breezy, in her God-given strength and uncommon grit, never missed a beat as mother to two growing girls and as a wife.

They returned to Enterprise in 1987 and Breezy became the secretary to the Director of Missions, Coffee County Baptist Association with 46 churches, pastors, and staffs.  She viewed her opportunity as a God-given calling.  For 14 years, she managed the office and many of its activities.

In 2001, she went “on the road” with Alabama Campers on Mission, and for ten years, they traveled the nation constructing churches.

Breezy’s real challenges began in July, 2005 when a large brain tumor was found and removed, followed by heavy radiation and chemo.  In 2006, she lost her daughter, Leah; her son-in-law, Chris Walls; and two grandchildren, Miller (5) and Mallory (3) to an auto crash.  In 2006, she also lost both parents.

Breezy never waivered in her faith.  She was a strong believer in the power of prayer in her daily life.  She instilled that same determined faith in her girls.

Her nickname was also her personality and she had God’s gifts of service and mercy.  She never demanded the limelight, but she was always popular and well liked.

She also believed in the power of a plate of brownies.  Numerous church members have commented about how Breezy brought brownies to them when they first visited Hillcrest Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Walt Miller; her daughter, Jennifer McNeal (Chris); four grandchildren, Tess, Paige, Anna, and Cooper McNeal; her brother, Don McCurry (Tina); and many family and friends, including her primary caregiver, Tonya Grant.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Friday, 7 August, at Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory, 4550 Boll Weevil Circle, Enterprise, AL (334-347-9598).  The funeral service will be at 10 am, Saturday, 8 August, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 500 Alberta Street, Enterprise, AL (334-347-2516) (nursery will be provided), followed by burial at Meadowlawn Cemetery.

In the hot August sun, even the most beautiful flowers will be gone in a day.  In lieu of flowers, please make a lasting donation to “Alabama Campers on Mission” (c/o Judy Ingalls, 615 County Road 23, Verbena, AL 36091, 334-201-4862).
