NEWVILLE. . .Charles D. “Charlie” Jackson, Sr., a resident of Newville, died early Friday evening, January 8, 2016, in the emergency room of a Dothan hospital. He was 73.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 11, 2016, in the Evergreen Presbyterian Church, Dothan, with Dr. Joseph Johnson, Reverend Ashley Drake Mertz and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, between Headland & Dothan. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Sunday in the sanctuary of the Evergreen Presbyterian Church and also from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Monday at the church.


            Memorial contributions may be made to the Evergreen Presbyterian Church, 1103 North Pontiac Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303 or Alabama Eye Bank, 500 Robert Jemison Road, Birmingham, AL 35201 or Alabama- Florida Council Boy Scouts of America, 6801 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305.


            Charles Jackson was born and reared in Dothan, son of the late John Will Jackson and Jessie Owens Jackson. He attended Dothan High School, Wallace Community College and Troy University. Mr. Jackson served his country in the U.S. Army. He was retired from the Dothan Technology Center as a teacher. In earlier years, he was employed as a teacher and coach in the Dothan City School System. Mr. Jackson coached football, golf, girls basketball and girls softball at Dothan High School. He was a member of the Evergreen Presbyterian Church and the University of Alabama Alumni Association. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by four brothers, John Jackson, Bill Jackson, Herbert Jackson and Henry Jackson.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Frances Kirkland Jackson, Newville; a daughter, Candace Jackson Hanners (Fred), Newton; a son, Charles Davie “Chuck” Jackson, Jr., Dothan; a sister, Jessie O’Neal, Dothan; four grandchildren, Katie Hanners, Will Hanners, Troy Hancock and Charles Davie “Chip” Jackson, III; mother of his children, Ann Walden Jackson; sisters-in-law, Melba Jackson, Mary Jean Jackson and Jeri Jackson; mother-in-law, Betty Kirkland; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Kirkland family, Dudley R. Kirkland (Alma), Alban “Bubba” Kirkland, James E. “Hap” Kirkland (Debbie), Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. (Kathy), Janet Guest (David), and Lisa Kirkland.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be James E. Kirkland, Alban B. Kirkland, Barkley Kirkland, Cleve Kirkland, Dr. John Jackson, Gary Hughes, David Guest and Harrison Mullen. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the nieces and nephews.
