ABBEVILLE…Charles E. Mims, a former resident of Abbeville, died Friday morning, February 15, 2013, in the Signature Health Care of North Florida in Graceville. He was 75.


            Memorial services, with military honors will be held at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, February 17, 2013, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Thomas D. Gamble officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302, or to the Henry County Veterans’ Memorial Park, c/o Elaine Kennedy, P.O. Box 115, Shorterville, AL 36373.        


            Mr. Mims was born and reared in the Union Community of Henry County, son of the late Euston Rodalphus Mims and Bessie Mae Bodiford Mims. He formerly lived in Roswell, New Mexico, while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Mims lived in the Union Community of Henry County most of his lifetime. He formerly owned and operated Charles Mims Painting in Abbeville and had also been employed at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, near Columbia, and also Hayes Aircraft in Napier Field. In earlier years, he owned and operated Mims Discount Furniture Company in Abbeville. Mr. Mims was a member of the Brown’s Crossroads Lodge #529. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Veta Mae Mynatt, Elba Rose Ethridge, Bessie Iris Armstrong, and Dot Mims Ethridge; and two brothers, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Mims and Billy Edgar Mims.


            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Tisha Mims Nowell, Headland; Elaine Mims Gwinn and husband, Malcolm, Indianapolis, IN; three sons, Wayne Mims and wife, Bonnie, Alamogordo, NM; Kevin E. Mims, and wife YonOk, Greenville, TX, and Todd Reeder and wife, Hannah, Boone, NC; a brother, Tom W. Mims, Sr. and wife, Ruby Hancock Mims, Abbeville; nine grandchildren, Chance Nowell, Chelsie Nowell, Douglas Mims, Stephanie Bower, Richard Mims, Aulana Gideon, Nathan Gwinn, Mina Whitehead, and Sheldon Mims; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ethan Bower, and Wesley and Eli Whitehead.
