Cosper Morris Pitchford (Lt. Alabama State Trooper, Retired), died Friday morning, September 26, 2014, at the home of a son in Newnan, Georgia. He was 76.


Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, September 28, 2014, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel, with Reverend Ray S. Reiley and Reverend David Kelly officiating. Graveside services with full Alabama State Trooper Honors will follow in the Gardens of Memory, between Headland and Dothan. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alabama State Troopers Association, P.O. Box 1286, Montgomery, AL 36104.


Mr. Pitchford was born in Tallapoosa County, AL and reared in Haleburg, son of the late William Elmer Pitchford and Alberta Cosby Pitchford. He was a 1956 graduate of Newville High School and also attended Auburn University. He had lived in Abbeville, Dothan, and Lake Eufaula, before moving to Tallassee, AL in 2002. At an early age, he married Margaret Flowers and later married Wynell Peel Shelley. In later years, he married Jeanette Thornton Rigsby Pitchford. Mr. Pitchford retired as a Lieutenant from the Alabama State Troopers and also retired from the Alabama Army National Guard with rank of Sergeant First Class. Cosper enjoyed working on the farm, helping his parents, fishing, watching grandkids play sports, the Atlanta Braves, and  loved University of Alabama football. He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church, Dothan, AL and attended Liberty Baptist Church in Tallassee.


Mr. Pitchford was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Thornton Rigsby Pitchford and a daughter, Kathy Sue Pitchford.


Surviving relatives include his children, Glen Pitchford (Leisa), Dothan, AL; Carol Pitchford Haas (Ed), Mobile, AL; and Blaine Pitchford (Natalie), Newnan, GA; a sister, Linda Bradley, Haleburg, AL; two brothers, Howard Pitchford (Pat) and Larry Pitchford (Janice), all of Abbeville, AL; six grandchildren, JoAnna Pitchford, Holli Pitchford Fuller (Justin), Shanna Haas Wilkins (Wade), Tyler Haas (Kelsea), Baylin Pitchford, Kathryn Pitchford, and Gage Pitchford; two great-grandchildren, Cameron Turner and Logan McConnell; five step-children, Lee Rigsby (Cindy), Alan Rigsby (Debra), and Alesa Stewart (Chuck), all of Tallassee; Sherry Shelley Barrett, Dothan, and Sheila Shelley, Lake Martin, AL; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.


Serving as active and honorary pallbearers will be the Alabama State Troopers Honor Guard.
