Doris Jean Sharron Major


 


Doris Jean Sharron (Dee) Major, a resident of Dothan, died Friday, January 11, 2013, at Flowers Hospital.  She was 83.


 


A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Allie Freeman officiating and Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at a reception in the church parlor following the services on Sunday.


 


Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013 at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Birmingham with Rev. Mickey Morgan officiating. The family will receive friends at Southern Heritage Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Monday.


 


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1380 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36301.


 


Mrs. Major was born August 7, 1929 in Jackson, MS, the only child of Ruth McCormack Sharron and Daniel B. Sharron. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi College of Business and Education and a member of Kappa Delta Pi honorary education society and Phi Mu social sorority at Ole Miss.


 


She made her home in Jackson, Mississippi for 15 years before moving to Birmingham in 1966 where she remained for 36 years. She and her husband were active members of the Vestavia Hills UMC, particularly promoting the ministry of Evangelism.


 


Mrs. Major has been a resident of Dothan for the past 10 years. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Dothan, participating in the UMW, Young at Heart senior group, visitation, Sunday School program and Bible Fellowship Study. She was a past President of the 20th Century Study Club of Dothan.


 


Mrs. Major is predeceased by her husband, Robert Stevens Major, Jr. who died in 1995, an infant, Daryl Denise Major who died in 1954 and a granddaughter, Sharron McLaughlin who died in 2010.


 


Survivors include three daughters, Lyndall Jones (Johnny) of Dothan, Patricia Adams of Ashville, NC and Elizabeth Grogan (Anthony) of Goodwater; nine grandchildren, Carolyn Replogle, Katherine Salvador (Adam), Lance Jones (Kim), Chance Jones (Debra), Rachael Adair (Brett), Matthew Grogan, Celeste Adams, Christopher Adams,  Steven Adams; seven great grandchildren.
