Donald Lee Cobb, an avid fisherman, lover of the outdoors and Gospel and Country music, ready always, with a quick smile and friendly, helpful ways died Thursday, December 20, 2012, at his beloved farm home at 769 Cobb Rd, The Big Creek Community in Dothan, AL. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, December 22, 2012, at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Coley M. Holloway  officiating. Burial will follow at Big Creek Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 1 to 2 P.M. Saturday, December 22, 2012, one hour prior to the service.  Flowers will be received or memorials may be made to Big Creek U.M. Church, 9515 Co. Rd. 203. Cottonwood, AL 36320, or to Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302.Don was born on November 2, 1937 to Pansy Green and Leon Cobb. Don graduated from Rehobeth High School at age 18, and was married the same year to his wife of seventeen years, Linda Whiddon, the mother of his son and two daughters. They sang Gospel songs and was active in Rehobeth High School where Don was president of RHS Band Boosters, and was active in PTA and Quarterback Club. He was also president of the Big Creek Community Club and a leader in the building of the Big Creek United Methodist Church Sunday School Rooms and bricking and updating the present structure of the church. He was Music Director, served on the official board and a lay speaker for the Methodist Church. He loved his church and was faithful as long as he was able to attend. Don worked as a policeman for Dothan, an employee at Twitchell’s, did government contracts at Ft. Rucker. His favorite job was for the Department  of Public Safety as a State Trooper where he served in Sumter County and at the Governor’s Mansion, doing personal security for George and Lurleen Wallace and their children in 1968. He was also a Real Estate Broker, opening his company “Cobb Farm and Realty.” He was a Tractor Trailer Truck Driver and a school bus driver for Houston County Schools, a supervisor for security at Sony in Dothan. He and his former wife, Glenda Zeiller owned Victory Tapes, where they made and sold tapes. The most popular, being a motivational tape, “Power of Words.” He was always a farmer, operating a vegetable stand on his farm on Hwy 109 near Kelly’s Deli. He had a ‘green’ thumb,a s well as, a golden voice. He could grow anything he planted, sing anything he heard and catch a fish when no one else could. He is preceded in death by a son at age 4, Mark; his father, Leon; and his brother, Herbert. They all died near where he died. He never could maintain his balance after the loss of them within a two year span.


He is loved and survived by two daughters, Donna Ward (Steve) of Abbeville and Ginger (Dennis) Weeks of Wicksburg; Ginger’s four children, Amber, Taylor, Summer and Hunter and Donna’s two children, Steve and Stephanie; his mother, Pansy Cobb; a brother, Leon (Rusty) Cobb, and two sisters, Jeanette Napier of Grove Park and Pauline Cobb and several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Sandra Spivey.


Pallbearers will be Sammy McLendon, Chris McLendon, Ken Parrish, Ben Barnes, Phillip Barnes, and Josh Lee.


Honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons, Stephen Ward, Hunter Weeks, and friends, David Faulk and Harry Jo McAllister.


A special thanks to Dr. Roddy Cook and Gentiva Hospice and Oxford Home Helpers for their kind and loving care of Don.
