DONALD  LINDBERGH  STEWART,  SR.


HEADLAND. . .Donald Lindbergh Stewart, Sr., a resident of Headland, died Friday afternoon, March 15, 2013, in a Dothan hospital. He was 85.


            Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 17, 2013, in the Headland Methodist Cemetery with Reverend Norman C. Simmons and Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements.  The family will receive friends following the graveside services.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church Child Development Center, 2506 State Highway 134, East, Headland, AL 36345.


            Mr. Stewart was born and reared in Ochlocknee, Georgia, son of the late Ulysses Coleman Stewart and Eula B. Owens Stewart. He was a 1946 graduate of Ochlocknee High School and received a B. S. Degree in Forestry from the University of Georgia in 1950. Mr. Stewart enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1951 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, serving during the Korean War era. He retired from the Army National Guard in 1987 with the rank of Major, having served with the Special Forces in the Panama Canal. Mr. Stewart was also retired as a Registered Forest Timber Buyer from Georgia Pacific in Cedar Springs, Georgia. In earlier years, he was employed with the Georgia Forestry Commission. After his retirement, Mr. Stewart enjoyed being involved as a volunteer and greeter at the Headland Piggly Wiggly with his son-in-law.


            Mr. Stewart was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board. He lived in Abbeville several years before moving to Headland in 1996. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by three sisters, Lois Shiver, Kathleen Sterling, and Ruth Sheffield, four brothers, James Stewart, Alvin Stewart, Rhudene Stewart and Norwood Stewart.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Betty Wilson Stewart; a daughter, Kathy Arrington (Greg); a son, Donald L. (Juma) Stewart, Jr., all of Headland; two grandsons, Stewart Arrington (Hannah), and Ben Arrington (Macy Spitler), a great-granddaughter, Millie Kate Arrington; a sister, Madeleine Alred, Moultrie, GA; three brothers, Cecil Stewart (Fay), and Charles Stewart, all of Ochlocknee, GA; J. L. Stewart, Swainsboro, GA; a sister-in-law, Gladys Stewart, Valdosta, GA; and a brother-in-law, Luke Strickland, Newnan, GA; numerous nieces and nephews.
