Douglas A. Newsome


Douglas A. “Doug” Newsome, a resident of Dothan, died Tuesday, February 17, 2014 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 81.


A native of Enterprise, Doug was born to Robert G. and Nell (Newman) Newsome December 8, 1932. He was a graduate of Enterprise High School and Troy State University and attended seminary at Emory University. An ordained United Methodist minister, he pastored numerous churches in the Alabama/West Florida conference. Upon retirement from the ministry, he was an active member of the Dothan Civitan Club and worked for 22 years at Eye Center South. In addition, he taught private piano lessons, and served as organist or pianist for Tabernacle UMC, Cloverdale UMC, Winslette Chapel UMC and several other local churches. Throughout his life, he was well known for his piano talents, playing for innumerable revivals, camp-meetings, concerts, weddings, and funerals. One of his most incredible accomplishments was playing the piano for the Blue Lake Pastors' Assembly for nearly 50 years.


Rev. Newsome is predeceased by his parents, a son, Tony Newsome, a brother, Wilburn Newsome, and a sister, Sarah Newsome Hutto.


Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Nadine Newsome of Dothan; a daughter, Renee' Jordan (Robert) of Dothan; a grandson, Andrew Howell of Dothan; a sister, Carolyn Simmons of Enterprise, AL; three nieces, Ann Wallace (Doug), Sue Simmons, and Debbie Sutton (Dave) all of Enterprise, AL; a nephew, Mike Simmons and Mike's special friend Shirley Helms of Enterprise, AL; two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and Angel Drennan of Cowarts, AL, who was like a daughter to him.


Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2014 at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday.
