MIDLAND CITY. . .Dr. Braxton W. Snowden, (CW4, U.S. Army, Retired), a resident of Midland City, died Saturday morning, November 22, 2014, at his home. He was 78.


            Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, November 25, 2014, in the Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend Sam Williams officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow in the church cemetery.  Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6:30 P.M. Monday at the mortuary in Headland.

            Dr. Snowden was born in Montgomery and moved to Newton with his family as a child. A graduate of Midland City High School, he served in the Air National Guard and also served in the Army National Guard. At an early age, Dr. Snowden enlisted in the    U. S. Army and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. While on active duty, he received a Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with a Silver Star. Dr. Snowden retired from the Army in 1987 with the rank of CW4 after thirty years service. While serving in the Army, he received a B. S. Degree in Aeronautics from the Emory Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He also received a Masters Degree and a PhD from Bethany Bible College in Dothan. A resident of the Sylvan Grove community of Dale County since 1987, Dr. Snowden was formerly employed by U. S. Civil Service at Fort Rucker as a Noise Mitigating Officer. A United Methodist Minister, he formerly served as Pastor of the Magnolia United Methodist Church, near Blue Springs. Dr. Snowden was a member of the Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church, the Claybank Masonic Lodge No. 908, and the Moslah Shriners, Ft. Worth, Texas. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason and a life member of the D.A.V. Chapter, #87. Dr. Snowden was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Walker Snowden and Evelyn  Welch Snowden Kuchta, two sisters, Barbara Street and Pamela Wilson, and two brothers, Donald Snowden and Johnny Snowden.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of fifty-eight years,  Sharon Woodham Snowden, Midland City; two daughters, Cindy Snowden, Daleville; and Debbie Douglass, Dothan; a sister, Martha Baker, Chicago, Illinois; and a half-sister, Anna Rue, Foley, AL; three grandchildren, Christine Shockley (Brad), Katie Cook, and Jessica Nix; four great-grandchildren, Conor Shockley, Emily Shockley, Alex Shockley, and Abbie Cook; sisters-in-law from the Woodham family, Mildred Dease, Runell Clark, Corrie Paramore (Earl), and Martha Woodham.
