Dr. Derry R. Snell


Dr. Derry R. Snell, 61, died peacefully in his home in Pike Road, AL, Wednesday, June 18, 2014, after a year-long battle with cancer.


Funeral  services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Bay Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Scott Cox and Rev. Coley Holloway officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 until 2:30 prior to service time on Saturday.


Derry was born October 26, 1952, in Houston County to the late Louie Frank Snell, Sr. and Bernice Williams Snell. He was a 1971 graduate of Wicksburg High School. In 1975, he received his undergraduate degree in Pre-Med at Auburn University and in 1980 he graduated from the UAB School of Medicine.


Dr. Snell worked many years as an ER physician in the Birmingham area before starting an Anesthesia residency at UAB in 1990 where he specialized in Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology. He was later hired as an Instructor/Fellow in the department. In 1999, Dr. Snell relocated to Montgomery, AL to start an Open Heart Program at Jackson Hospital.  In 2001, he was appointed as Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. There he met Sandra Steinhauer, whom he married in August of 2003.


Dr. Snell is predeceased by his parents, a brother, Louie Frank Snell, Jr. and a sister, Renee Snell Merritt.


Dr. Snell is survived by his wife of nearly 11 years, Sandra Steinhauer Snell of Mobile; his uncle and aunt, Max and Naomi Snell of Dothan; nephews, Mitchell Hynes and Jamey Hynes; nieces, Elizabeth Hynes Baker, Kathryn Elizabeth Causey, Sara Clair Causey and Taylor Renee Merritt; several cousins; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jerry and Beverly Steinhauer; sister’s-in-law, Karen Steinhauer DeLoach (James) and Cindy Steinhauer Causey (Mark).


Derry had a deep love for his pets, (5 Pugs and 2 cats) and was very passionate about Pug Rescue. In lieu of flowers, Derry requested that donations be made in his honor to Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue and Alabama Pug Rescue.
