Dr. Marion Lothrop Hanahan, III died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Extendicare after an extended illness of Parkinson’s disease. He was 86.

A graveside service will be held at Memory Hill Cemetery on Friday, March 22, 2013 with The Rev. Peter Wong of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity officiating.

Visitation will be in the parlor of Ward Wilson Funeral Home from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the graveside service at 11 AM.

Dr. Hanahan was born in Dothan, Alabama, March 9, 1927 at Moody Hospital. He was the son of the late Annie Bowden Hanahan and Marion L. Hanahan, Jr.

Upon graduation from Dothan High School, he immediately joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and after receiving his training at NTC Great Lakes, Illinois was stationed on a ship, the USS Pittsburg in the Pacific also spending time stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

After the conclusion of the war, he attended and graduated from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

In 1954, he graduated, receiving his medical degree from the Medical College of Alabama which later became the Medical Center in Birmingham. The following year, he completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La. Afterwards, Dr. Hanahan returned to the Alabama Medical Center where he specialized in Pediatrics. After completing his residency, he returned to Dothan where he practiced as a Board Certified Pediatrician until his retirement. Prior to his retirement he was a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of both the American and State Medical Associations and the Houston County Medical Society. He had Staff Privileges at Flowers Hospital and Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Dr. Hanahan had many diverse interests before his illness, including duplicate bridge, traveling, the Arts, especially opera, and the primitive arts of antiquity. Above all, he enjoyed many years at his beach cottage on the Gulf of Mexico in Panama City, Florida.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and his sister, Ann Hanahan Banks and husband, James Oliver Banks of Eutaw, Alabama.

Survivors include two nephews, James Oliver Banks, Jr. (Connie) and John Sessions Banks of Atlanta, Ga; and First cousins: Dr. LaBruce M. Hanahan, Jr. (Suzanne) of Dothan; Mrs. S. Emmett Lucas, Jr. (Nina) of Greenville, S.C. Hasell Hanahan Handrahan (Bob) of Birmingham; Jean Hanahan Hall (Gene) of Birmingham; Milner Doster Hanahan (Peggy); James Hasell (Jimmy) Hanahan of Dothan and Mary Kelly Hendrich (Richard) of Clinton, Mo.The family would to thank the staff at Extendicare Nursing Home for providing special care for many years, and especially his sitters, and particularly Angel Smith, from the Georgeanne Welch Home Care Service for their years of devoted service during his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, the Wiregrass Humane Society, or Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
