DR.  MARTHA  HAGOOD



COLUMBIA…Dr. Martha Hagood, Missionary Emeritus of Southern Baptist Convention, a resident of Columbia, died Monday morning, September 9, 2013, in a Dothan hospital. She was 89.


            Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, in the First Baptist Church of Columbia with Pastor Randall Johnson and Reverend Eddie Farmer officiating, and eulogies to be given by Lois Norman and Harold Thomaston.  Burial will follow in the Columbia City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the parlor of the First Baptist Church.


            Memorial contributions may be made to Walking In Love Ministries, P.O. Box 2249, Forney, Texas, 75126 (In support of Nigerian Orphanage and Eku Baptist Hospital) or to a favorite charity.


            Dr. Hagood was born October 15, 1923 in Oxford, Alabama, daughter of the late Dr. Edwin White Hagood and Imogen Scarborough Hagood. She was a graduate of Albertville High School and Howard College (Samford University) where she was a member of the Hypatia Honor Society and Phi Mu Sorority. Dr. Hagood was also a graduate of the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham. She was certified by the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of American College of Surgeons. She was honored as Alumna of the Year by Samford University in 1979.


            Dr. Hagood served as a medical missionary of the Southern Baptist Convention for forty-three years, first at Kyoto, Japan, and then in Eku, Nigeria. After retirement, she moved to Columbia in 1995, where she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia, and alternately attended the Columbia Missionary Baptist Church, and the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Dr. Hagood was well known across the state as a mission speaker to churches and W.M.U.’s. She was preceded in death by a sister, Imogen Hagood, a brother, Thomas D. Hagood, a niece, Melissa Kay Oakley, and a brother-in-law, Walter Flake Oakley III.


            Surviving relatives include a sister, Margret (Peggy) Hagood Oakley, Columbia; a sister-in-law, Jane Claybrooke Hagood, Albertville, AL; nieces and nephews, Charlotte Hagood Rives (Lawrence), Albertville, AL; Barber Hagood Clark (Harry), Trussville, AL; Thomas D. Hagood, Birmingham, AL; Walter Flake Oakley, IV (Kay), Montgomery, AL; Cynthia Oakley Martin (Bobby), Hoover, AL; Edwin Hagood Oakley (Carolyn), Dothan, AL; Paxton Fields Oakley (Sheila), Columbia, AL; great-nieces and great-nephews, Joseph Martin (Katie), Daniel Oakley, Trey Oakley (Kasey), Nicole Oakley, Michael Oakley, and Kendall Oakley.  


            Serving as active pallbearers will be the nephews and great-nephews and serving as honorary pallbearers will be active and inactive deacons of the First Baptist Church of Columbia.
